Eric Yuan’s fascination with Silicon Valley was sparked when he heard a speech by Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft Corp., detailing the boundless promise of the future of the internet.
Once in the US, Eric Yuan worked for a company called WebEx, a web conferencing software provider.
He joined WebEx in the late 1990s and quickly became a key engineer and vice president of engineering. However, over time, he became frustrated with the limitations of WebEx’s platform, particularly the poor video and audio quality, and the clunky user interface.
In 2011, he made the difficult decision to leave WebEx/Cisco and started his own company. “So, after I left Cisco, I thought I was the Vice President of engineering, I viewed web bugs, and I have a lot of contacts. It should be straightforward right? That was my thought, but I was completely wrong.” Nobody wanted to Invest in Zoom considering it wasn’t a good idea. But Eric Yuan was ready to prove everybody wrong.
He founded Zoom Video Communications in April 2011, with a team of engineers who shared his vision. The company’s headquarters were established in San Jose, California.
