The roots of the American Dream can be traced to the Founding Fathers, the architects of American independence from England (1776). Their belief in unalienable rights laid the foundation for this cherished concept. So, the initial idea for it did not revolve around personal wealth; instead, it encompassed a vision of equality, justice, and democracy for the entire nation.

During this time, and after World War II, the homeownership and suburban idealism era marked a new phase in the American Dream. GIs returning from war sought stability and a slice of the “good life” for their families. Owning a home with a white picket fence and a secure job became the ultimate representation of success.
In the 1960s, The Civil Rights Movement brought back the original American Dream concept by highlighting the disparities that existed for marginalized communities.
Martin Luther King:
“So even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”
During Barack Obamas inaugural speech he addressed the American Dream to assure that America retained its position as the most prosperous nation. He stated, “But those values upon which our success depends – honesty and hard work, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism – these things are old. These things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history.”
In moments of adversity, the notion of the American Dream exhibits exceptional resilience. This phenomenon can be attributed, in part, to the unwavering faith in the potential of individual initiative that lies at its core.
